Jordi Sugranes is an artist based in Olesa de Montserrat and Barcelona, Spain. Practicing under his last name only, Sugranes creates nude oil paintings and photographs. He self-describes his artworks as emotive, elegant, and erotic.
Through his artworks, Sugranes focuses on capturing his own vision of the female figure. He strives to reflect the beauty of the nude form in all the canvases he paints. Furthermore, his images capture serene and meditative imagery imbued with sensuality and mystery. Aside from depicting the nude genre, he also creates landscapes and seascape paintings.
At the young of eight, Jordi Sugranes was already drawing and exploring how colors interacted with each other. As he grew up, he became interested in learning more art techniques and means to express his creativity. From 1980 to 1985, he studied technical drawing, illustration, and watercolor art. However, in 1991, he began to paint as a self-taught painter focusing on realism as a genre and oil painting as his preferred medium. In 2002, he decided to pursue a career as a professional painter.
Sugranes’ painting process begins with him working from photographs he takes of the different models that pose for him. He then uses oil paint and applies it on canvas using a paintbrush and a spatula. Contrastingly, when he produces photographs, he starts each photo shoots with a base idea for the image. He uses a Sony DSC-R1 to shoot with after discussing with the model his vision for the photo shoot. Afterward, he edits the photographs accordingly using the software Photoshop.
His paintings take inspiration from the artworks of the masters of Classical art such as Spanish portrait and landscape painter Joaquin Sorolla, Dutch painter and printmaker Rembrandt, and Spanish romantic painter and printmaker Francisco Goya. Furthermore, Sugranes mixes his Classical art influence with contemporary art ideas in his depictions of the female figure.
Jordi Sugranes attended the School of Arts and Crafts of Olesa de Montserrat. Furthermore, went to the Technical Drawing School of Professional Training in Olesa de Montserrat. Additionally, he took classes at the Comix School CCC and participated in digital photography and editing course taught by professor Tomas Muñoz.
His work exhibited in various solo and group exhibitions throughout Spain, specifically in Barcelona. Ever since 1995, Sugranes entered his artworks in a variety of competitions such as quick painting contests and drawing and engraving competitions. Most notably, he participated in the Santa Olivia fair, the Art Exhibition El Vilosell, and the 1st Naturalist Painting Competition of the Picos de Europa National Park. Furthermore, his paintings are part of different private collections in countries such as Spain, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, and the United States.
Jordi Sugranes strives to continue evolving and promoting his work worldwide.
